Time to start systematic board work?
In the beginning, the board of the company often includes founders and relatives. When the company grows, there is a need to get the company's management systems and processes in order. Often at this stage, the founders realize the importance of the board and start systematic board work.
This is a good time to bring an external board member into the board. An outsider sees things that owners struggling with operational challenges may not notice. An external member with previous board experience can significantly improve the quality of the board work and increase the added value the board brings to the company. It is recommended that there should always be at least two external board members to ensure good group dynamics.
Examples of how an external board member helps the company:
- bring discipline to board work and thus added value to the company's operations
- challenge and spar the CEO
- enhance strategy work and decision-making
- expand the company's contact network
